UK Dashcam Laws: Everything You Need to Know
Dashcams are entirely legal in the UK — but how you use and share footage is governed by UK GDPR and data protection rules. Here’s what every driver needs to know.
Recording in Public
Recording on public roads is lawful. Dashcam footage is admissible in court and has been used successfully in thousands of insurance claims and criminal prosecutions.
GDPR Considerations
If you use footage for anything beyond personal purposes (e.g. posting online), you become a data controller and need to consider UK GDPR obligations. For personal use only, the “household exemption” applies.
Sharing Footage
You can share footage with police, insurers, and courts without restriction. Sharing on social media where faces or plates are clearly identifiable may require you to blur identifiers.
Mounting Position
Your dashcam must not obstruct your view. Mount behind the rear-view mirror, within the wiper-swept area. Avoid positions that block your forward view.
